Eilat is the last green spot before a journey of about 3,000 kilometers over the Sahara Desert for migratory birds flying south in autumn, and the first green spot for those returning north in spring. In the past, the Eilat salt marsh served as a natural "refueling station," but the development of the city severely harmed the habitat.
