How many times has it happened that you wanted to enjoy a piece of nature—an flowing river, animals, chirping birds—but you don't feel like traveling far? In the Lachish River Park in Ashdod, you can enjoy all of these and more, without leaving the city limits. Right before you discover what awaits you here, let's get to know the river up close. A few facts about the Lachish River. The Lachish River stretches over 70 km, from south of the Hebron Mountains to south of Ashdod Port, at the point where the river flows into the sea. Within Ashdod's jurisdiction, only 10 km of the river pass— from Giv'at until the mouth to the sea. The river disappoints for the most part— from Giv'at Adom until the Giv'at Brit bridge, and it flows mainly with floodwater. Only in a short section 3.5 km long—from Giv'at Brit bridge to the connection with the sea—does the river become strong year-round thanks to high groundwater infiltration that drains the urban area. This is exactly the area where the Lachish River Park is located, and the water here flows all year long. So what is in the Lachish River Park? The Lachish River Park extends from the bridge of Adva Park to the mouth of the river into the sea. Along its entire length, 3.5 km, there is a wide, paved promenade that allows getting around even with baby strollers and is suitable for people with disabilities. There are seating areas, shade, lawns, water taps, restrooms, animals, sculptures, vegetation, and even a paintball area. The sculptures, planned in advance at low height, were sculpted in a Russian symposium. Why? So children can climb on them, sit on them, and even take pictures with them. What animals will you meet here? Behind cages you'll find zebras, antelopes, a white oryx, ostriches, deer, onagers (wild asses), spotted animals (נקודים), and sheep. Along the riverbank there are quite a few birds, including a curlew-like bird (קורמרן), grey night heron (ענפת לילה אפורה), crows, myna (מיינה), kingfisher (מגלן), siskins (סיגסה), kestrels? (כסופית), and agami heron (אגמית). If you equip yourselves with binoculars, you can watch them up close from birdwatching huts, and even enjoy birdwatching tours that take place here during the season. You can also learn about dolphins here, at the "Mamali"—the Dolphin and Sea Center (מחמל״י), which combines a guided visit in a museum with a tour along the Lachish River and an explanation about the dolphins' habitat. Rich vegetation grows along the riverbanks, and at the end of the park you can see a large grove of white acacia trees. In the center of the park, near the floating cube pier, you'll find pedal boats that let you sail along the river for 1.5 km. On each boat, 4–5 people can ride. The boats operate in the summer until October, every day of the week between 9:00–16:30. A boat ride costs about 50 NIS for Ashdod residents and 60 NIS for visitors from outside Ashdod, with payment for a boat and not per person. Those who arrive until the end of the promenade (toward the west) can turn left and reach directly Ashdod's sea beaches and the Pirates Park. Finished spending time at the Lachish River Park? It's good to know that next to it, in the eastern part of the promenade, is Adva Park Ashdod. How do you get there? The park has two main entrances: the eastern one from Herzl Boulevard near Adva Park Ashdod; and the western one from Laskov Street near Ashdod Port. This entrance is preferable for those who prefer to walk around the park itself. For this, at the Ashdod junction turn west (Road 41) and drive until Ashdod Port. Before the port gate, turn south (left) onto Laskov Road. After about one kilometer you cross the Lachish River on a bridge and immediately turn left to the park parking lot. Coming from outside Ashdod? Take the Ashdod interchange heading toward the city. At the Ashdod Port junction continue straight, and after 700 meters turn left at the traffic light. Another drive of about 400 meters to the traffic light where you continue straight (for Adva Park, turn left here toward Herzl Boulevards). On your side you'll see the port, and then you'll go up to the Laskov bridge over the Lachish River channel. After the bridge you'll reach a roundabout at the edge of residential neighborhoods in Ashdod. Here you need to turn around, and after 100 meters from the roundabout turn right to the parking lot (there is no signage directing to the park from this point).

All the information about the Big Dune in Ashdod Who doesn't want to go back to childhood—for those days when we could just play in the sand or fool around outdoors? Today, when we're all older, let's be honest: it's a bit embarrassing to do those things in public. But what if we told you that there is a nature reserve in Israel where everyone, in all ages, is required to fool around there—otherwise there's no point in coming? If you haven't heard about it yet, now is the time to get to know the Big Dune in Ashdod—the place where everyone is invited to sink into the sand, roll around, and basically do whatever comes to mind. The main thing is to enjoy. A moment of history The Big Dune in Ashdod is a remnant of mobile dunes that arrived in the country from Africa, containing quartz remnants from the granite mountains. The marina, the port, and the surrounding construction blocked the further migration of the sands to the area, which is why it is important to preserve them. In fact, the dune is the starting point of the Sand Reserve that reaches Nitzanim—and together they form an area of 20,000 dunams. It earned the nickname "The Big Dune" because it reaches a height of 35 meters. What else is special about the dune? Here you can find authentic local vegetation—remnants of grapevines orchards, fig trees, and palms—growing on the high groundwater characteristic of the sand area. This type of ancient agriculture was known as "mouassi." In addition, the reserve has animals, including 200 deer individuals active at night. You won't be able to see them active, but you can search for their tracks in the sand. Set out Follow the green markings coming out from the Shikmim (sycamores) parking lot southward along about 400 meters. Take into account that your shoes will sink a bit into the sand, but that will allow you to look around at the surrounding vegetation, the soft roaming dunes sands that came from Africa, and maybe even find animal tracks—such as lizards, beetles, snails, ants, rodents, a hare, the golden jackal, and the Israeli gazelle (deer). Very quickly you will see in front of you the country's big sand dune towering up to about 35 meters. Now comes the fun part—start climbing up the dune, while sinking into the sand, but don't give up until you conquer the summit. The way back down is up to you—running, rolling around, or even a slow descent on foot or while sitting down and sliding. If you came with children, it's likely they will repeat the climb-and-slide route many, many times. At the end, retrace your steps until you reach the Shikmim parking lot. Here you can stop for a light refreshment, sit in the shade of sycamore trees, next to one of the KKL (JNF) picnic tables. If you recognize a familiar blossom scent and for a moment think you're sitting under a fig tree, pay attention: the fruit of the sycamore tree, called "jums," only looks like that, but is inferior in taste. How do you get there? You can reach the Big Dune in Ashdod both by private car and by train. Those arriving by private car will park at the Shikmim parking lot, and those arriving by train will walk for about 5 minutes from Ashdod train station to here. To do so, you must turn left when exiting the station and walk straight to the second roundabout; there turn left again onto the kurkar road, which will lead you to the Shikmim parking lot, from which the hiking trail begins.

All the information about the Ecological Park, Ashdod-ים Fortress The ecological park, Ashdod-ים Fortress, covers an area of over 300 dunams between the Ashdod-ים Fortress and the "T" (Taw) beach strip in Ashdod. It was built around the ecological environment of the shoreline strip in collaboration between Ashdod Tourism and the Environmental Quality Division of the Ashdod Municipality, the Israel Lands Authority (rmi) Open Spaces Fund, and the planning by Liev Shalem, who specializes in landscape architecture and ecology. For your convenience there are three walking paths—the Seashore Path, the Orchard Path, and the Deer Path—which will take you to hidden gems in the park, to observation terraces over the sea and over unique vegetation and animals, which turned the park into their habitat. Along the paths you will find information signs describing the unique habitat of the seashore and the adjacent sand area. Among the plants you can see tamarisk trees, remnants of vineyards/terraced orchards, and ancient irrigated crop vegetation that thrives on high groundwater characteristic of the sands area close to the sea. Near the seashore there are areas for sea turtle egg-laying, under the supervision of the Nature and Parks Authority. A family of deer also found a place to live here. You can see them at sunrise—before they go for their walk as far as Nitzanim Beach—or toward sunset when they return to the park. All the information about the Fortress Beach in Ashdod and the Ashdod-ים Fortress Imagine yourselves climbing the steps of an ancient fortress located on a bright-golden strip of white sea shoreline, overlooking a sea in shades of turquoise. In the distance you can see large ships. Near you, waves crash onto the shore. Beneath you are water wells, remains of a mosque, four watchtowers, horse stables, and goods storage rooms. Around the fortress are avenues of trees and vegetation typical of the high water-table areas in the region. You can see all of these—and more—at the Fortress Beach. This beach is not designated; there are no lifeguard services, and no restrooms or showers. Fortress Beach Ashdod | Photo courtesy of: Guy Yachiali Archaeological and historical site Ashdod-ים Fortress as it is seen today The fortress as seen today was built on remains from the Byzantine and Umayyad periods (early Muslim), when it served the Muslim garrison as residential quarters. In 1033 an earthquake brought down large parts of it, and it was restored during the Crusader period. The fortress was built with local kurkar (limestone) stone. What was here? Water wells, four watchtowers, a second floor—which can be reached via the steps that remain in place. In the residential level there were also horse stables and large warehouses for goods. Around the fortress there was an enclosing wall that protected the fortress, with a deep moat that confined it on three sides. The location of the fortress was strategic in several respects. This can be learned from the Madaba map—a mosaic map from the sixth century CE discovered in the city of Madaba in Jordan. The map depicts all the events/capitals of the Land of Israel in the Byzantine period, including Ashdod. There you can see that the fortress area was considered a thriving city with a pier and quay, and steps leading to houses—and even to structures with columns, indicating trade. The proximity to the seashore and the commerce that took place there made it easy for those living in the fortress to stock up on food and supplies. The lookouts who stood in the watchtowers could give warning of an approaching danger. When the Byzantine ships neared the shore, they set fire in the fortress in the designated area. This was the signal for transferring the information about the approaching danger, which reached as far as Ramla. The renovations and refurbishment of the Ashdod fortress in mid-2020 were completed, including restoration of the fortress structure. At the entrance to the site and throughout the fortress there are information stations that tell the history of the place. As night falls, the fortress is lit with special nighttime lighting, giving the ancient structure a unique and spectacular appearance. Climbing up to the "Floating" terrace on the second floor will give you a breathtaking view of the sea, the nearby ecological park, and this golden shoreline strip. The fortress is open to the public free of charge every day of the week, from 9:00–22:00. During the renovation works, the fortress was made accessible for people with physical limitations.
