🛣️ Motorway Vignette — Mandatory
To drive on Swiss motorways, the annual vignette (42 CHF) is MANDATORY. It is stuck on the windscreen and is valid from 1 December to 31 January of the following year. Fine of 200 CHF if absent! Generally included in our rentals.
⛽ Fuel in Switzerland
Fuel is cheaper than in France (around -10%). Petrol: ~1.75 CHF/L (~€1.80), Diesel: ~1.90 CHF/L (~€2). Automated service stations 24/7 (card payment). Fill up in Switzerland before returning to France!
🚦 Swiss Highway Code
- • Speed limits: 50 km/h in town, 80 km/h outside built-up areas, 120 km/h motorway
- • Very high fines: The Swiss system is strict (200-500 CHF for moderate speeding)
- • Priority to the right unless otherwise signed
- • Headlights on day and night, all year round
- • Alcohol limit: 0.5 g/L max (same as France)
🅿️ Parking in Geneva
City-centre parking is expensive and limited. Blue zones: parking disc required (max 1-2h). Public car parks: 3-5 CHF/h (~€3-5). Avoid parking in the centre — use Park & Ride facilities on the outskirts with a free shuttle to the centre.

From November to April, winter tyres are MANDATORY in the mountains and strongly recommended everywhere. Our vehicles are fitted with them automatically. Snow chains required on certain mountain passes (sign B26). Chain rental: €15.

Our vehicles allow driving in France, Italy and throughout the EU. No special formalities to cross the Franco-Swiss border. Note: Mont Blanc Tunnel to Italy = €48 toll return (not included). Swiss vignette not valid in France or Italy.

No, a French or European licence currently in force is sufficient. For licences issued outside the European Union, an international driving permit is required (+ original licence). The driver must be at least 21 years old (young driver surcharge €15-25/day for under-25s).
