Jaffa Slope (Madrone of Jaffa)

מדרון יפו

The Coastal Plain and Gush Dan

All information about the Jaffa Slope. The slope in Jaffa served as a construction-waste site from the 1950s until 1988, and the waste mound reached a height of about 15 meters. As part of the project, the waste hill was lowered in order to create a gentle slope that allows views of the sea. A promenade was built along the coast, including a bike path. A sea beach was prepared for fishing, lookout plazas were prepared, areas for sports and recreation were set aside, and landscaping areas and lawns were developed. Three green axes connect the Ajami neighborhood to the park. Where to eat nearby? At 85 Kedem Street, right next to the slope, is the iconic restaurant "The Old Man and the Sea," a legendary fish restaurant that attracts many diners from around the country. Today the restaurant has an additional branch at Jaffa Port. Have you decided to stay the night in Tel Aviv? Abraham Hostels Tel Aviv offers you leisure and lodging in a young atmosphere, in a perfect location on Levontin Street in the south of the city. At the site there is a variety of lodging options as well as… a cool rooftop with a bar in the building. Also on site: registration for cultural and culinary tours of the city.

In the ancient mill, built on the remains of the old mill "Tachunat el Vesta," about 12 pairs of millstones operated for grinding flour, powered by channeling water from the Yarkon River into the mill wheels. Abu Rabah Mill today. Visitors who come to the mill today may not get to see an operating mill, but they will be able to marvel at the beautiful appearance of the building that was restored and reconstructed in 2004. It is now a pilgrimage destination for hikers, thanks to its pastoral location, situated between eucalyptus trees and magical water vegetation. During your visit you can meet water birds nesting in the reserve and even jump in for a wet dip in the cool pool. From here you can also continue to the popular hidden waterfall, Leah House, and the pool of "nopharim" (waterlilies/flowers). How do you get there? Waze : Abu Rabah Mill.

Givat Aliyah Beach in Jaffa: a Hurfati coffee spot

חוף גבעת עליה ביפו: נקודת קפה חורפית

The Coastal Plain and Gush Dan

All the information about Givat Aliyah Beach in Jaffa: a Hurfati coffee spot on rainy winter days, when the wind hits and the sea is very rough. It's worth going to this special beach in Jaffa to see the power of the sea crashing onto the newly renovated promenade, with sea waves breaking almost onto the steps that lead down to the sea. In winter, take into account that the coffee must be prepared outside the car, so you'll need a volunteer. After the coffee boils, you go inside to sit in the car, watching the sea waves through the car window, through the steam rising from the cup of coffee. It's also worth going in summer days, near sunset, when the view is lovely. Tip for good field coffee: for every cup of water, add one and a half teaspoons of coffee, and let the water slowly boil. When the coffee starts to rise, remove it from the heat and add sugar—half a teaspoon per cup. Stir well and let it boil again. When finished, it's recommended to pour into glass cups.

Blooming daffodils in the Pi Glilot area

פריחת נרקיסים באזור פי גלילות

5.0
The Coastal Plain and Gush Dan

All the information about the blooming of daffodils in the Pi Glilot area: Nature values are well preserved in this area thanks to the nearby Pi Glilot site, which stored large quantities of gas and fuels and therefore, from a safety standpoint, construction around it was prohibited. The visit is highly recommended, but note that it is usually also the rainy season, so it is likely there will be lots of mud, and it's a good idea to bring suitable shoes. The daffodil bloom is around December–January, and in the months of February–April you can see anemones, the Iris haaretz-Israeli, Scarlet iris, sea-safrons (Scaevola), and other spring flowers there. And if you're already in the area, it's worth going east, toward Highway Ayalon, where you'll find a series of ancient caves called Aphek Caves. A 5-minute drive from Tel Aviv, you can find the Aphek Caves—an enchanting nature corner that many don't know about. In the place there is a cluster of ancient Samaritan burial caves, carved into the rock, surrounded by winter and spring carpets of bloom. The cave site was discovered in 1951 during construction works for the Coastal Railway, and it was studied again in 1989 with the paving of the Ayalon routes. The Aphek Caves are located west of the Ayalon routes, near Pi Glilot. Did you take a walk? Did you see blooms? Take photos and upload them to our Bloom Reports section!

Israel Trail – the Yarkon

שביל ישראל - הירקון

The Coastal Plain and Gush Dan

All the information about the Israel Trail – the Yarkon: We did the Israel Trail segment between Reading and the sources of the Yarkon. The trail winds along and next to the Yarkon River stream. In Tsvi Gilat's book—Israel Trail— the length of the segment is listed as 18 kilometers. On a sign posted at the Tel Aviv Port it's written that the length of the Yarkon is 28 kilometers. In my estimate, the route is about 23 kilometers, since there are several bends that shorten the trail. As mentioned, the segment begins in the area of the mouth of the Yarkon, and from there you go east along the north left bank until Afeq Park at Rosh Ha'ayin. Walking in this section along the seashore—Ramat HaHayal—is relatively convenient. Here Yehoshua Park ends, and from here you leave civilization for the wild Yarkon. This is also the time to stock up on water from one of the faucets; the next water point is far away, in the Baptist village. Little by little, the Yarkon changes its face: the channel becomes narrow, and from time to time there are small waterfalls. If you forget the Yarkon for a moment, you'll think you're walking along one of the rivers in the north of the country—many bamboo reeds and the dusty road remind you of the Jordan. Along the river are scattered mementos from past attempts to utilize the water; here and there there are lovely spots where grillers (barbecue people) have set up, arriving by jeeps and private vehicles. Here too, as in the north, the trail markings are clear, but they waste time and energy. All kinds of detours and loops are frustrating and bring you back to nearby points from which you set out. It's not clear how the route is determined and what its purpose is. You come out of the jungle and pass the concrete house of yet another water plant, and from there to the Baptist village, where there's a rest corner for hikers: shade, water, and, at the same time, a selection of booklets and CDs about Jesus. From there you continue and bypass Yarkon National Park until the nearby Afeq Park. Again, it's worth bearing in mind that the segment is very long, and in Ramat HaHayal you should stock up with enough water.

The visit is suitable both as an introduction to the city, as a romantic place, and as an attraction for tourists.

Bialik Square

כיכר ביאליק

The Coastal Plain and Gush Dan

All the information about Bialik Square. Bialik Square is one of the calmest and quietest places in central Tel Aviv, perhaps because it has not yet been discovered by Tel Aviv residents. The square is at the end of Little Bialik Street with a great deal of history. Around the square, you can see several of Tel Aviv's historic and important buildings: 1. Beit Bialik— the national poet's Tel Aviv home; a special and very impressive house relative to the period in which it was built. 2. A. Skora House—the second Tel Aviv municipality building, which served it until the mid-1960s, when it moved to the building on Even Gabirol. Since the year of the century, the building has served as the City Museum of Tel Aviv–Yafo. 3. Between them— a relatively new building, but integrated into the architectural landscape: the Felicia Blumenthal Center for Music and a library. In the center of the square there is a fish pond and ornamental plants where you can sit along its edge. Until the beginning of 2008 there was a mosaic sculpture by Nachum Gutman depicting the history of Jaffa and Tel Aviv. The sculpture was removed as part of the renovations because it hid the municipal building. Not far from there, you can reach other important buildings such as the Ra'uvn House Museum and other fine historic structures worth seeing.

Local guide to Tel Aviv activities

Jaffa, Neve Tzedek and the White City

Southern Tel Aviv brings together the historic soul of the city: Old Jaffa port, the flea market, galleries, then Neve Tzedek and its elegant streets. It is the best area for a cultural half-day before sunset over the Mediterranean.

The UNESCO-listed White City gives central Tel Aviv its architectural identity. Rothschild, Bialik and Dizengoff help you understand the city while staying close to cafés and restaurants.

Beaches, sport and local life

Gordon, Frishman, Hilton and Alma Beach each have their own atmosphere. Paddleboarding, surfing, cycling along the promenade or simply watching sunset are easy to combine.

Carmel Market, Florentin and Yarkon Park round out a day well, with street food, street art, green spaces and a very local rhythm.

Restaurants and evenings

Tel Aviv is one of the country’s strongest food cities: hummus in Jaffa, modern Israeli cuisine, chef restaurants, cocktail bars and kosher addresses depending on the neighborhood.

For nightlife, Florentin, Rothschild and Tel Aviv Port are the easiest zones. Thursday night is especially lively before the quieter rhythm of Shabbat.

Practical tips for Tel Aviv

Getting around : Tel Aviv is flat and compact, ideal for cycling. Shared scooters and bikes (Bird, Lime) are everywhere. The Rav-Kav bus covers the whole city and the light rail will soon make getting around easier. For trips outside the city, renting a car is recommended — Elynor Tours offers the best rates from Ben Gurion Airport.

Budget : Tel Aviv is relatively expensive by European standards. A restaurant meal costs 60-150 NIS, a cocktail 45-75 NIS, a museum entry 30-60 NIS. Markets and street food are the best options for smaller budgets. Tip: many activities are free (beaches, Jaffa, Florentin, the Bauhaus Center).

Shabbat : From Friday evening to Saturday evening, much of the city shuts down (public transport, shops). It is the perfect time to enjoy the beaches, Rothschild Boulevard and residential neighbourhoods such as Neve Tzedek. Restaurants and bars reopen on Saturday evening with a special energy.
