🚗 Tips for driving in Lisbon and Portugal
⛰️ Lisbon's 7 Hills
Watch out for the slopes! Lisbon is very hilly with narrow, cobbled streets (calçada portuguesa) and steep gradients. Historic districts (Alfama, Bairro Alto, Graça) are hard to access by car. Tram 28 runs everywhere through the narrow streets. Avoid driving in the historic centre — use peripheral car parks and public transport instead.
🛣️ Via Verde Tolls
Electronic system: Some motorways use Via Verde (barrier-free electronic tolling). Your number plate is photographed and charged. Rent a Via Verde transponder (€1/day + tolls) to avoid fines. Main motorways: A1 (Porto), A2 (Algarve), A5 (Cascais). Toll budget: Lisbon–Porto €20, Lisbon–Algarve €18.
🚦 Portuguese Highway Code
- • Speed limits: 50 km/h (town), 90 km/h (road), 120 km/h (motorway)
- • Alcohol: 0.5 g/L max (0.2 g/L for young drivers)
- • Priority to the right unless otherwise indicated
- • Warning triangle and high-vis vest mandatory in the vehicle
- • Dipped headlights mandatory at night outside built-up areas
⛽ Fuel in Portugal
Fuel is cheaper than in France (approximately -10%). Gasolina (petrol): ~€1.65/L, Gasóleo (diesel): ~€1.55/L. Galp, BP, Repsol stations everywhere. Card payment at the pump. Tip: fill up at supermarkets (Continente, Pingo Doce) to save 5-10 cents per litre.
🅿️ Parking in Lisbon
Colour-coded zone system: Green = €1/h (2h max), Yellow = residents only, Red = no parking. Underground car parks: €2-3/h. Park & Ride recommended (Oriente, Sete Rios): park and take the metro. Heavy fines (€30-60). Leave NOTHING visible in the car (theft risk).
🏖️ Driving in the Algarve
Scenic routes: The Algarve offers superb coastal roads. Watch out for winding roads inland. Free parking at most beaches (except July-August). EN125 = main coastal road (watch out for speed cameras). Praia da Marinha, Benagil: paid car parks in high season (€5/day).
💡 Elynor Tours tip
Important recommendation: Pick up the car at the airport and head straight out to explore Portugal (Sintra, Cascais, Algarve, Porto). Do NOT drive in Lisbon's historic centre (hills, narrow streets, trams, scarce parking). Use the metro, bus and tram (Viva Viagem card €6 + top-ups) to visit Belém, Alfama, Bairro Alto. Take the car back for excursions and the return to the airport.
