About

All the information about the Far East — in Haifa: The Tikotin Museum of Japanese Art — Japan in Israel! In the heart of the Carmel Center, near the Hotel Promenade and the Educational Zoo, a cultural gem awaits you that you shouldn't miss. The Tikotin Museum is an established museum founded in 1960, and proudly holds the title of the only museum of Japanese art in the Middle East, offering an abundance of Japanese art objects and presenting permanent and rotating exhibitions of traditional, modern, and contemporary Japanese art. The museum's design was done in the Japanese spirit, with attention to the intimate feeling of its visitors and the use of natural materials. The museum is a gem of Japanese architecture and provides a glimpse into another, magical, and intriguing world. In recent years, it has undergone an upgrade and now presents exhibitions of an international standard. The museum's collection includes about 8,000 items of traditional, modern, and contemporary Japanese art, among them scroll paintings, traditional and modern prints, ceramics, swords, and a variety of art objects. In addition, near the museum is the Kish House, the popular educational activity center—where you can enjoy a wide variety of creative workshops and special activities for the whole family, drawing their inspiration from the exhibitions in the spirit of Japanese art and culture. More about the museum: upon the museum's establishment, it was defined with three main objectives: deepening knowledge of Japanese culture and art among the Israeli public, encouraging academic research into this cultural heritage, and promoting mutual understanding between Israel and Japan. Over the years of its existence, the museum became a center for spreading Japanese culture, understanding this unique culture, and fostering friendship between the two peoples. In 2003, the Tikotin Museum was ranked second after the Israel Museum by the Ministry of Education and Culture, thanks to the quality of its exhibitions and collections. In 2009, the museum was awarded a letter/award from the Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs for the exhibitions held there and for its contribution to strengthening ties between Israel and Japan.
