About

All information about the Glauon Fortress in the Yaar Gubrin. The Egyptians ruled in Canaan between the 12th and 16th centuries BCE for 400 years. At the beginning of the 12th century BCE, also known as the period of the settlement and the Judges, geo-political changes occurred in the Land of Israel. The Philistines settled along the coastal plain to the west, the Israelites—in the highlands ridge to the east—and in the meantime the Canaanites remained under Egyptian protection. The change came with the Egyptians' departure and return to Egypt, at which point Canaanite cities such as Lachish and Azekah were conquered and destroyed, probably by the Philistines who came from the west. During excavations by the Israel Antiquities Authority that took place during 2020 in the Yaar Gubrin, the Glauon Fortress was discovered—a single-story structure in the shape of a square, measuring 18x18 m. The pottery tool findings uncovered in the excavations led the excavators to conclude that the fortress was built in the 12th century BCE and ceased to exist in the early Iron Age (1000–1200 BCE), around 1150 BCE. The Glauon Fortress is located on a spur at an elevation of 197 m above sea level, south of the Gubrin stream. It was established on the boundary between the area controlled by the Philistines and that of the Canaanites, so that its settlers could observe the main road that ran along the stream and connected the coastal plain in the west with the Shephelah of Judah and the central highlands ridge in the east. The external walls were built in two rows of large stones, with smaller stones between them. The average wall width is 1.90 m, and they served as a foundation for a brick structure; at its four corners there were a kind of prominent towers, leading the researchers to conclude that the four corners of the fortress served as watchtowers. What else was in the fortress? A rectangular threshold stone in the east, serving as an entrance to a structure containing thirteen units, including courtyards, a tower, and rooms arranged symmetrically on both sides of the structure's central axis.
