About

All the information about the Benedictine Monastery in Abu Ghosh: Abu Ghosh is a wonderful village. It is known mainly for its food and our good relations with it—since the establishment of the State—but in the heart of Abu Ghosh there is a magical place that not everyone knows. The Benedictine Monastery, which began as a Roman water cistern in the second century CE and became an impressive monastery in the 12th century, is located right in the center of Abu Ghosh, near the spring. From the main road there are signs to both the spring—near which there is a mosque—and to the monastery. If you arrive at the monastery, ask for Olivia, a kind monk who loves to give tours of the place. The monastery contains a beautiful courtyard, and a cool prayer hall whose main attraction is its walls, decorated with rare 12th-century frescoes. These frescoes are very special, since not many 12th-century frescoes have survived around the world. If you're lucky, Olivia will sing for you several psalms, and with the echo from the walls of the hall it's an amazing effect. In addition, they have a small souvenir shop containing excellent limoncello that they prepare on site.
