Frequently asked questions

Practical answers before booking your hotel in Venice.

Which sestiere should we choose in Venice?

For St Mark's Square and the iconic sights, San Marco (Gritti Palace, Danieli, Bauer). For calm and authenticity with views over Giudecca, Dorsoduro. For quiet alleys away from the crowds, Cannaregio (toward the historic Ghetto). Avoid hotels on the terra ferma (Mestre) unless on a tight budget — Venice's magic lives within the sestieri.

What budget should we plan for a Venice hotel?

Expect €250-500 per night in a 4-star, €600-1,500 in a 5-star (Gritti Palace, Aman Venice, Belmond Cipriani, St. Regis), €150-280 in a well-located 3-star. Peak seasons: Carnival (February), Art Biennale (May-November every other year), Film Festival (September), Easter. Winter outside Carnival: low prices, magical city without crowds.

How do we reach Venice?

Marco Polo Airport (VCE) is 20 min by bus to Piazzale Roma (~€10), then vaporetto or water taxi to your hotel. For palace stays, a private water taxi straight to the hotel runs €100-150. Train from Mestre reaches Santa Lucia in 10 min. Treviso (TSF) is 40 min by bus.

Are there kosher hotels in Venice?

The Cannaregio area is home to one of the world's oldest Jewish Ghettos. Synagogues, the Jewish Museum and a few kosher restaurants (Gam Gam, Ghimel Garden). No hotel is strictly kosher, but palace hotels (Gritti, Aman, Belmond) can arrange kosher cuisine on request with notice. The Ghetto remains one of the most moving centres of Italian Jewish culture.

When is the best time to visit Venice?

April-May and September-October offer pleasant weather (15-25°C) and beautiful light. Summer (July-August) is hot, humid and crowded. Winter outside Carnival (January, early February) is cold (3-10°C) with occasional acqua alta — magical but to be planned for. Avoid the Film Festival (September) if you want reasonable prices.
