Which neighbourhood should I choose to stay in Athens?

Plaka and Monastiraki, at the foot of the Acropolis, are ideal for a first visit: pedestrian lanes, tavernas and direct access to the ancient sites. Syntagma is the most central area (Parliament, metro, shopping) and home to landmark hotels such as the Hotel Grande Bretagne and the King George. Kolonaki is the chic shopping district, while Koukaki is quieter, on the southern slope of the Acropolis. For a beach holiday, the Athenian Riviera (Glyfada, Vouliagmeni) offers modern seaside resorts 20-30 minutes from the centre.

What budget should I plan for a hotel in Athens?

Expect 80-150€ per night for a 3-star hotel, depending on season and location. Four-star properties range from 180 to 350€, including comfortable addresses such as the NJV Athens Plaza. Five-star hotels run from 350 to 900€ and beyond for the Hotel Grande Bretagne, the King George or the Four Seasons Astir Palace on the Riviera. Rates rise sharply from June to early September. April-May and October offer the best value with a pleasant climate.

How do I reach the city centre from Athens airport?

Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport (ATH) is about 35 km from the centre. Metro line 3 (blue) links the airport to Syntagma directly in 40 minutes for 10€ per person, one way. The X95 express bus also serves Syntagma 24/7 for 6€. An official taxi is roughly 40€ in the day and 55€ at night (fixed fare). Reaching the Riviera costs 35-50€ by taxi. We can arrange a private French- or English-speaking transfer on request.

Is there a Jewish community and kosher options in Athens?

The Athens Jewish community has about 3,000 members. Beth Shalom Synagogue on Melidoni Street, in the Thissio district, is the main place of worship and is supported by an active Chabad House (Chabad Athens). The kosher restaurant Gostijo, nearby, serves Sephardic cuisine under rabbinical supervision. To stay close for Shabbat, hotels such as the Electra Palace or AthensWas, well located in Plaka, allow you to walk to the synagogue. Request a room with a manual key for Shabbat when booking.

When is the best time to visit Athens?

April to June and mid-September to late October are ideal: mild temperatures (20-28°C), beautiful light on the Acropolis and manageable crowds. July and August are very hot (35-40°C) and can feel stifling in the city, but work well if you combine with the Riviera or the islands. Winter (December-February) is mild but rainy, with fewer tourists and lower hotel rates, perfect for a cultural city break.
